Recently, we were able to provide evidence that exogenous l-arginine possesses superoxide-scavenging properties and is able to delay the cell-mediated breakdown of NO as well as to reduce copper-mediated oxidation of lipoproteins [ 11]. Since other antioxidants, such as vitamins C or E, have been shown to improve endothelial function [ 1214] and to reduce atherosclerosis [ 15] the effect of l-arginine, beside its potential effect on NO biosynthesis, might involve antioxidant effects as well.

The results of our recent investigation confirm previous findings of an antioxidant effect of l-arginine made by ourselves [ 11] and others [ 19] and further characterize the antioxidant potential of l-arginine.
