“It will take everything in me to get there, but I am not afraid of hard work.”
Victor Martinez has one of the most classic and aesthetically pleasing physiques that bodybuilding has ever seen. Eight-time Mr. Olympia Ronnie Coleman went on record as saying that Victor has what it takes to dominate as Mr. Olympia. But Victor has had his share of bumps in the road leading to Mount Olympus. Does he still have what it takes, or has his time passed? MD athletes and experts weigh in. For the full story with an exclusive interview with Victor and comments from other industry experts and insiders, see the February 2013 issue of Muscular Development. Evan Centopani
“I learned a long time ago to never count anyone out. I’ve heard it so many times about guys like Branch and Jose, and they always came back and won again. One year I was sitting in the audience at the Mr. Olympia, I think it was 2009, the year Dennis Wolf didn’t do well. You should have heard what people were saying: he’s all done, he’s through! No, he had one bad show. Victor will have to fight harder to get back on top, but the man is a fighter. He’s still got what it takes to be the best.” Branch Warren
“I’m the last person to say anyone can’t come back from an injury, or a few injuries. I’ve done it myself so I know it can be done. The dude is still one of the best, and once he has some solid time to train and put it all together, he’s someone we all have to watch out for.” Jose Raymond
“Of course Victor can still be one of the best. All the things that got him to the top like his structure, size and shape, he still has. He’s had some bad luck and he made a few bad decisions over the years, but if he really wants it and is willing to work harder than ever before, he would be unstoppable. Victor needs to treat his training and prep the way Jay Cutler does, totally businesslike. He also needs to get rid of all the hangers-on it seems he’s had for years. I think he actually cut most of them loose after he got out of prison last spring. Being in there seven months showed him who his real friends were.” Lee Haney
“I feel Victor still has great potential to win bodybuilding’s most coveted titles. Although, I do feel it has to come together in the next two or three years and he needs to remain injury free. His is a physique of hard work and time, which equates to quality.”
