5 Questions with Sarah Hayes
2010 NPC USA OVERALL Women's Champion

1) Share with us how and when it was that you decided to get serious about becoming not just a Bodybuilder but eventually your desire to be a professional Bodybuilder?
A) I decided to get serious about competing in the NPC when I first met Christine Bongiovanni during my preparation to compete in the 2007 NPC Gopher Classic Figure division. I remember meeting with Christine for the first time at her posing seminar. She offered to rent me her posing suit, and when I tried it on she suggested that I had the physique of a female body builder. From that time on, she had planted the seed in my mind that I wanted to pursue to become an IFBB Pro Bodybuilder.
2) What kind of training did you switch from when you decided to get serious about the sport and what are you doing now regarding your training style?
A) I had always trained as an athlete, using more of the Olympic training styles and full body training with super sets, lifting every other day until I began training as a BB. It was an adjustment, as I’ve always been an athlete training for power and explosiveness. When I began training for BB, I had to slow down my movements and squeeze my muscles harder during every rep to bring more shape to my body. Currently, my training schedule is as follows:
Monday – Back / Tuesday – Arms / Wednesday – Legs / Thursday – Shoulders / Friday – Chest / Saturday – Arms detail (optional) / Sunday – Legs detail (optional)
I change my training styles throughout the year, depending on my competitions. In the offseason, this past year, I trained with Jeff Dwelle & Scott Brown (both MBBs) who pushed me beyond my imagination. I trained with very high intensity of heavy loads / weights AND I trained with higher reps – 20-50 reps / set for usually 3 sets and sometimes 4 sets. During my in season competition preparation, I’ve been training with heavy loads for 4 sets of 8-10 reps, sometimes 12 reps.
3) You won this year’s NPC USA Overall and earned your IFBB Pro Card in the process, tell me what this represents to you now that you actually accomplished it?
A) I am honored and thrilled to have accomplished the magnificent awards of Miss USA Champion and IFBB Pro status. This incredible feat not only fulfills my dreams of becoming an IFBB Pro, but also grants me the opportunity to inspire others, especially other females, which is my ultimate personal goal!!
4) You have the chance now to pick 4 other Pro Women Bodybuilders from the last 30 years of the sport, what would that Call Out look like?
A) Cory Everson / Lenda Murray / Carla Dunlap / Yaxeni Oriquen.
5) Now that you have arrived on the Pro scene, what do you hope to accomplish before your done and what would you want people to say about you when you leave?
A) I am applying for consideration to be accepted to compete in The 2011 Arnold Classic for my Pro debut. My personal aspiration in life is to be a fitness role model for ALL women. After my competition days are over, my hope is that people will view me as an IFBB Pro who is an inspiration to others, and who represented the sport with class and dignity.
