Initial Interview, December 17th, 2004 - 2450lb+ Totaling Super-Heavyweight 20 year old
What are your age, bodyweight and occupation?
I am 20 years old, 440lbs, and I am a student.
What are your best lifts?
A 930lb Squat, 715lb Bench Press, 810lb Deadlift, and a 2455lb Total all @ SHW.
How long have you been lifting and where?
I’ve been training with weights since I was 12. I’ve been training specifically for powerlifting for the last few years.
What style of training do you use?
I train with the Westside methods.
What type of equipment do you use and how do you get the most out of it?
For squat I wear a Karin’s double denim suit, and Metal briefs and wraps. For bench I wear a Karin’s double denim shirt. I deadlift in my Metal briefs and an old Frantz poly squat suit.
In training I wear my old Frantz suit straps down for every max effort lower body workout. For DE workouts I wear different gear depending on what time of year it is... Metal briefs in the off-season, and my briefs and suit straps down when I prepare for a meet. For bench I train raw, but when I get 12 weeks from a meet I will do shirt work almost every week after my Max effort move.
Who are you?
I’m a college student at the moment, studying Criminal Justice. I plan to go into Corrections. I still live at home with my parents because it’s free and I don’t have a lot of money. I’ve always been huge, but I’ve not always been strong. I remember when I was 12 years old and just starting lifting weights and I couldn’t even bench press 75lbs, or squat 200lbs. I guess I really started to love lifting when I was a sophomore in high school and could out-lift all the seniors, it felt good to beat people at something, and have something you could be good at.
Where do you train?
Westside Barbell Club.
Who do you admire in the sport?
I look up to a lot of people in this sport in and out of my gym. People like Garry Frank, Brent Mikesell, Steve Goggins, Becca Swanson and Brian Siders. I also admire a lot of the old time lifters like Bill Kazmaier, and Ed Coan and so on. I look up to a lot of the people I train with too. There are too many to list, but I’ve trained with just about everyone at WSB between the AM and PM crews, and everyone has something you can learn from them.
How did you start lifting? Did anyone help you coming up?
I started powerlifting in high school. My best friend and I, Zech Cole were training partners and went to some local raw high school meets and got hooked. Later we started training with Joe Bayles, Josh Guthridge, and Jim Danison after Zech met Jimmy when he was buying chains for us to train with.
What lifting technique suits you best in each of the three lifts, and what do you concentrate on most during your lifts?
I squat with a wide stance, bench with my elbows in and feet tucked under me, and I deadlift sumo style.
When I lift I like to be psyched up, but still able to focus on the lift and what I need to do. Lots of lifters will get too psyched up and their form will go to crap because of it.
Please list your training numbers in common movements.
I’ve done a 925lb parallel box squat with the camber bar, 870 lb with the buffalo bar in metal briefs, a good-morning with 700lb for 3 reps, a 925lb rack pull, and a 725lb deadlift off a 3 inch box.
For bench training I’ve done 805lbx3 on the 4 inch rack lockouts, 680lb on the 5 board, 660lb on the 4 board, 605lb on the 3 board and a 575lb carpet press.
What is your training routine?
I train 4 days per week, with occasional extra workouts. Monday is Max effort squat/deadlift...Wednesday is dynamic bench....Friday is Dynamic squat, and Sunday is Max effort bench.
What specific exercises do you believe have been effective in increasing your bench squat and deadlift?
For my bench I rely on a lot of board presses, carpet presses, dumbbell work, and extensions.
For squat and deadlift, I do a lot of heavy box squats, box deadlifts, low box squats, ultra wide pulls, rack pulls, and a lot of good morning variations.
Have you ever “plateaued” on any of your lifts and how did you correct the issue(s) causing the halt in progress?
So far I haven’t really plateaued at all since I started training at WSB two years ago (knock on wood).
What has gotten you to your current level?
Training partners. I would not be where I am if it weren’t for all the great people I train with.
Have you ever had any injuries? How do you avoid them in training?
I’ve never been injured. I have a lot of nagging pains, but that comes with the sport.
How do you feel about what you've accomplished so far and what are your goals?
I’ve come a long way in the last few years on my lifts, going from 1800lb Total in November of 2002, to 2455lb Total in November of 2004. That’s great, but I’m far from satisfied and have a long way to go. Goals? I’d like to have the all-time total record one day.
How do you intend on continuing to progress?
Keeping an open mind, and listening to lifters who are much more experienced than I am. When someone thinks they know everything, that’s when they stop making progress.
What do you recommend non-elite lifters should concentrate most on in training?
Simple training and focusing on core lifts. Beginning lifters should just stick to compound moves and get strong on those before trying some of the more advanced methods like Max effort and dynamic effort work. Don’t use up all your resources before you need them. Beginning lifters will make great progress on simple programs like 5x5 and that builds a great base of strength for the more advanced training methods.
Describe your nutritional plan.
It used to be that I would eat anything I wanted, but this year I started learning more about how to eat right, and how it can benefit my training and strength. I don’t have a really complicated plan on how to eat, I try to stick to mainly whole foods and get a big variety of protein sources everyday. I was 475lbs at a meet I did in May this year, and felt awful, I started eating a lot better, and came in the IPA nationals 20lbs lighter, leaner, a lot stronger and felt great. My next step will probably be to work with a professional.
When and where is your next meet?
I plan to lift at the APF Seniors, June 2005, in Detroit.
Anyone you would like to thank?
All of my training partners I’ve had through the years at Westside, without them, I would still be trying to total 2000. This is really a team sport, and if you don’t have one, find one.
Thanks Tim.
